Troy Ave made a bold claim on his recently released NuPac album, which dropped Monday. On the 32-minute track “Truth Be Told PSA,” the Brooklyn rapper reflected on how he almost signed to Kendrick Lamar‘s label Top Dawg Entertainment.
Troy Ave claims that while he was incarcerated, Lamar sent well-wishes his way through his then-manager Hovain. “I get to thinking, I jump on the phone with Hov and say, ‘Yo, put the plan in action. We gonna go out West when I come home and I’m gonna sign to TDE,'” he says. “I always liked what they was doing, they kinda independent like us, but way bigger because they went and got with a major and they got sh– that I like to see like loyalty and unity, that type of sh–.” The deal never happened because the “whole sh– fell through,” per Ave.
TDE founder/CEO Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith got wind of the claims and responded via Twitter. “4 the record… I’ve never had a convo with Troy ave or any 1 in his camp.. neither has KDot.. yesterdays story was fake news… #TDE,” he typed, before adding, “There’s your answer…Now everybody kan stop calling and emailing me asking if it true…”
Ave’s claims come after his unfiltered interview with Power 105.1’s The Breakfast Club earlier this month, where he called Lamar a “weirdo rapper.” He then noted how he was a fan of the Compton MC, adding, “I f— with Kendrick cause the n—a reached out while I was in jail, and that’s some real n—a sh–.”
